ChatGPT wants to Help with Homework but in a Less Cheating Way
OpenAI wants to hack kids with newly packaged Educational tools.
How new generation AI is going after students, is getting more intense. OpenAI is trying to shed its reputation as a student cheating tool and OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are trying to hack entire campuses and the Education industry for profit.
OpenAI before GPT-5 goes live, call this lo and behold, Study Mode. As sycophant-native as ChatGPT has become, this takes the risks to another level. It’s not just a gimmick, it’s a PR based feature - Study Mode, a new feature within ChatGPT that aims to “help students” develop their own critical thinking skills, rather than simply obtain answers to questions.
Is this what AI for Good looks like in 2025?
Is it harmless, is it AI for good?
“ Study mode is designed to help students learn with ChatGPT, not just get answers. It guides users step by step, asking thoughtful questions and adapting to each student’s goals and skill level - much like a tutor would. “
ChatGPT is likely one of the least safe tools I know around for siphoning personal data and tracking our citizens. I think OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Anthropic hacking kids and Campuses is just really bad for society and especially these kids who are graduating into a higher young unemployment scenario. OpenAI boasts about replacing human work, as a brand.
A lot of the women in OpenAI’s educational team must be taking ethical lapses of judgement for higher salaries, including a bunch of former Substack employees.
Key Points:
Study mode launches for Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users today, with ChatGPT Edu getting access in the coming weeks
Built with teachers and learning-science researchers
Step-by-step prompts, scaffolds, and quick quizzes replace one-shot answers
I think it’s fair to say OpenAI and Anthropic are infiltrating both Government, National Defense and Education at the same time (among other industries like Law, Media all the while ramping up cognitive debt impacts on young people at such an unimaginable scale) - what could possibly go wrong?
ChatGPT has made academic misconduct and taking technological short-cuts almost a normal thing. What incentives are we subliminally giving to our kids? Amid rising cases of misuse of artificial intelligence tools at universities, OpenAI is hacking entire School boards and University campuses, with just massively huge deals. This isn’t just freemium ChatGPT subscriptions, this is a war on the future.
The company expects to introduce Study Mode to its Edu subscribers, which largely consists of young people whose school administrator’s have purchased a plan for the entire student body, in the coming weeks. A lot of young people didn’t ask for this, it was imposed on them.
College Degrees, Cognitive Debt and Creative Thinking Numbing
Apparently if you offer quizzes it makes everything your sycophant native persuasive chatbots have done as hypnotic answering machines to young minds okay.
Instead, OpenAI’s new learning tool can offer interactive prompts and quizzes to help you learn more about what you’re studying.
Thanks for all the answers ChatGPT, you’ve made the College degree totally redundant now! Sorry to all the young men, failing in life. It’s not your fault.
Recent reports indicate that in the U.S., the job market for young men with college degrees has become increasingly similar to that of their counterparts with only a high school diploma, particularly regarding unemployment rates. Sorry about that!
OpenAI is making the argument with this feature that it’s a good actor in Education.
When ChatGPT first launched in 2022, its widespread use in school settings sparked fear among educators, leading to generative AI bans in many American school districts. After years of lobbying OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are more powerful in schools and College Campuses in the U.S. than ever. Profits are surging. Adoption is high for young people globally.
Raising a generation who use ChatGPT for all their communications sounds like a really great idea! 😂 Don’t just cheat on your homework and assignments. Augment yourself with the ghost in the machine. 😕 Feel the AGI.
Daily Active Users
Over one-third of 18-to 24-year-olds in the US use ChatGPT, and among these users, over one-quarter of their messages are about learning, tutoring, and school work, according to OpenAI user data. We’ve lobbied an entire generation to be slaves of not just Capitalism, but AI Capitalism. Students and young people have never been so powerless in human civilization, while Venture Capitalists and people like Sam Altman have never been as powerful.
Now with the launch of Study Mode, OpenAI hopes to improve ChatGPT as a learning tool, and not just an answer engine.
What ever should I learn ChatGPT? If you know everything, the world is certainly my oyster.
Young people are worried about the future of work, and we’re forcing students to use the tools of the companies who are most likely to replace their careers and make them and their student years entirely redundant!
When you ask a question with study mode turned on, ChatGPT can give you interactive prompts that combine “Socratic questioning, hints, and self-reflection prompts” to help you learn about your question. Sounds like Teachers are going to be next on the chopping block! Brilliant.
Study Mode Continues the Big Grift
Of course, there are limitations to how effective Study Mode truly is. Students can easily switch into the regular mode of ChatGPT if they just want an answer to a question. Which makes you wonder how this is anything but a publicity stunt?
OpenAI’s VP of Education, Leah Belsky, said in a briefing that the company is not offering tools for parents or administrators to lock students into Study Mode. OpenAI is such a leader, why deprive anyone of infinitely pleasing answers? That would be wrong.
OpenAI says Study Mode is just the company’s first step to improving learning in ChatGPT. Only three years of cheating so far, soon young people will have to cheat themselves into having a viable future.
The New Normal of Compression Culture: Cheating by Default
The study mode is designed to avoid simply serving up a complete essay or exam answer, but OpenAI’s products are designed to be addictive, hack reward systems, mirror cognition, provide easy answers, and augment cognition while allowing young people to skip steps in a preference for convenience by token prediction. How many jobs will be killed by convenience by token production do you suppose in the lifetime of these students? Does OpenAI really care about its customers or students?
Features like Study Mode will mean OpenAI’s incentives and hacks are even more buried into how young minds will be integrating with these token prediction systems. OpenAI claims that they have collaborated with experts to make this possible:
“Under the hood, study mode is powered by custom system instructions we’ve written in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts to reflect a core set of behaviors that support deeper learning including: encouraging active participation, managing cognitive load, proactively developing metacognition and self reflection, fostering curiosity, and providing actionable and supportive feedback.”
AI Companies Hacking the Future
AI companies are increasingly competing for the attention of college students, with OpenAI rival Anthropic introducing its own “Learning mode” feature for Claude in April. Google has similar things on the way. These AI Monopolies are on-boarding young people to their new OS, operating systems of the future.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared on Theo Von’s podcast “This Past Weekend” to discuss the rapid pace of AI development. Altman believes these advances will change the way education works in the future. Spoken like the altruistic Venture Capitalist that he is of course. As VCs have cheated the system involved hacking their way into Trump’s Government ripping up the rule books to suit their pocket books and bank statements.
You cannot Escape Big AI
Forget BigTech now there’s BigAI, companies like OpenAI and Anthropic that are quickly becoming very powerful. Even in our most cherished institutions like education, law, government, democracy, media and paramount for the future of jobs and work.
The percent of U.S. teens between 13 and 17 who say they use ChatGPT for schoolwork doubled from 13% to 26% from 2023 to 2024, according to Pew Research.
Young people are now forced to embrace the ghost in the machine, like collaborating with puppet-masters. No educational cartoons, just Sam Altman and his legions - waiting for you to grow up into their world, his world.
BigAI firms could infiltrate Education, Healthcare and Biotech to become obscenely powerful companies. OpenAI said it picked “custom instructions” because it lets the company “quickly learn from real student feedback and improve the experience — even if it results in some inconsistent behavior and mistakes across conversations.” Process, Surveillance, Improve - Personalize. Capture users.
Something is very wrong in American Capitalism:
BigAI wants to cheat the future as well, and harness the data of young impressionable minds. Most the Teachers on Subsack are giving advice on how to use AI and its tools. I’m horrified, it’s not what I was hoping to witness. Google won’t be left behind either, AI Mode in Search is getting a new canvas mode that can help you make things like study guides, while NotebookLM’s new Video Overviews feature uses AI to create slideshows with narration.
Students are proving high quality data for these BigAI companies that now include:
Who are BigAI 2025 to 2030?
OpenAI
Anthropic
Google
xAI
Meta
We cannot take Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Palantir or anyone else in this debate. In Chinese this is also Alibaba, DeepSeek, ByteDance, Tencent, Baidu and a few others.
Since the launch of ChatGPT, Educators have been wrestling with a fundamental question: Is AI helping students learn or just helping them cheat? Meanwhile using AI more and more in classroom settings and in how students are asked to prepare for “the workforce of the future”.
OpenAI talking like Students are an Experiment
In sharing about Study Mode, OpenAI makes student users like an optimization use-case:
OpenAI is making using ChatGPT for school a gamified setting, like a video game. This is the playbook of how you make video games more immersive and addictive. This is product at its worst from BigAI and it’s only going to escalate in the 2025 to 2030 period.
“Jayna Devani, the international education lead at ChatGPT’s US-based developer, OpenAI, said the company did not want ChatGPT to be misused by students and the tool was a “step toward” encouraging constructive academic use of ChatGPT.”
ChatGPT is augmenting compression culture in a way that permanently changes how young people deal with problem solving, creativity and divergent thinking. Scaffolding actually means reliance on Machine intelligence in an era where it’s not guaranteed this will have a positive impact on jobs, the economy, equality or opportunity. Or even privacy, freedom and human rights.
I don’t think OpenAI cares about those things. Nor do I believe people at OpenAI have or are paid to have a moral compass.
Fascinating read. Such a powerful sentence: "Young people are worried about the future of work, and we’re forcing students to use the tools of the companies who are most likely to replace their careers and make them and their student years entirely redundant!"
ChatGPT simultaneously makes it harder to find a job and easier to set out on your own, e.g. start a business. People respond to incentives, so this will sort itself out in some way.
Growing up with ChatGPT and not developing discipline and grit is a totally different story though.
