Reddit forges pact with OpenAI to bring content to ChatGPT

Hello Everyone,

Given the revenue generation growth of OpenAI in 2024 with the cash cow of ChatGPT for Enterprise, you could make the argument that OpenAI is a kind of BigTech.

Whatever the case may be, it’s partnerships with News organization seems to be preparing it for the launch of a web search product. You know what else might help with that, Reddit. Reddit that has gone public recently is seeking to bolster its advertising growth.

On May 16th, 2024 Reddit announced a partnership with OpenAI.

OpenAI on the other hand says it’s bringing Reddit’s content to ChatGPT and our products. Sounds ominous!

  • OpenAI will bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products, helping users discover and engage with Reddit communities. To do so, OpenAI will access Reddit’s Data API, which provides real-time, structured, and unique content from Reddit. This will enable OpenAI’s AI tools to better understand and showcase Reddit content, especially on recent topics.

  • This partnership will also enable Reddit to bring new AI-powered features to redditors and mods. Reddit will be building on OpenAI’s platform of AI models to bring its powerful vision to life.

  • Lastly, OpenAI will become a Reddit advertising partner.

In February Reddit struck a lucrative licensing deal with Google. Reddit appears to be really cashing in with their IPO. The stock in the pre-market RDDT 0.00%↑ is up 9% on the news.

So of course, the deal will allow the ChatGPT maker to train its artificial intelligence models on Reddit content. Hopefully Reddit will also get some GPT-4 augmented features. It’s not clear how this might empower Mods. The deal will also “enable Reddit to bring new AI-powered features to Redditors and mods” and use OpenAI’s large language models to build applications.
