Hey Guys,
Elite strikers are always the most entertaining fighters from a mainstream MMA point of view.
Dana White Contender Series (abbreviated “DWCS”, season 2) winner Sean O’Malley fits the bill. While the UFC have tried to manufacture super-stars before, ‘Sugar’ has cultivated a personal brand almost like a Creator would in the era of social media.
Sean O’Malley is an interesting fighter. He has 2.4 million followers on Instagram. He next fights Peter Yan at UFC 280 in by far his stiffest test yet.
After he won DWCS II he said:
“I want to be a superstar, and I know I can be,” he told MMAjunkie after the fight. “That’s what’s going to happen.”
O’Malley is a lanky Bantamweight with exceptional speed, movement and power, a pretty rare combination.
He’s 15-1, with 11 wins by KO and nine 1st round finishes.
O’Malley, 27, is now one of the UFCs most recognizable stars at the Bantamweight division. O'Malley's promotional debut came against Terrion Ware on December 1, 2017 at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale. It’s hard to imagine, where has the time gone?
Back when he was 22, UFC President Dana White said O’Malley is (the) “kid has the style and the mentality to be a star.” In 2022 that’s what he is today. His fight with Yan is on Saturday October 22nd, 2022. It will be a match between the elite strikers of the division.
O’Malley made in a sense the DWCS what it is today, some of the best match making and MMA drama around. Since then the Sugar Show has been happening in style:
Though UFC 280 perhaps represents Sean O’Malley’s first true test of a high quality opponent. The UFC have not rushed him into dangerous opponents, in fact quite the opposite.
By the Numbers
Significant strikes landed per minutes are elite.
Striking defense is also elite, as are knockdowns relative to his lanky frame.
His speed and footwork are both decent.
I don’t think he’s a generational talent, but he is a talented kickboxer with plenty of charisma and an “it” factor according to the UFC promotion. A lot of a MMA’s fighter’s career success actually based around how profitable they can be for the organization of the UFC.
Sugar is not a boring fighter.
While he may not have the raw KO power that Conor McGregor had in his prime, he’s fairly marketable for a small man.
He’s also a fairly accurate puncher.
With a career 62% striking accuracy.
95% of his game is standing.
He’s also a head-hunter by preference.
He understands his job, about the business and the business of fighting and how it’s an entertainment sport first and foremost. As of July 18, 2022, he is #13 in the UFC bantamweight rankings. With a win over Yan, that could all change.
His loss to Marlon Vera was mostly a fluke, he’s essentially undefeated.
He now has 439k Twitter followers. The UFC clearly treats their own (DWCS winner) well.
But is “Sugar” Championship material? We’ll find out soon enough, if all the hype has been warranted. Petr Yan is likely even a more mature striker and kick-boxer in terms of raw cage control, but perhaps O’Malley’s movement and reach can be an advantage?
Sean O’Malley has been groomed to be a superstar in a sense since he made his Octagon debt all those years ago.
His resume is not stellar, he’s not gone against the best of the best. But now biologically he’s reaching his prime (27 years to 31 years). It’s a rather brief window for elite MMA stars. It’s also rare to see fighters under Lightweight with actual power. So there’s a lot of potential and intrigue still in his brand and career, as well as for the UFC to keep pumping his name.
O’Malley trains at MMA Lab.
He big fight at UFC 280, he will be the away team. Abu Dhabi is considered nearly as good as ‘home territory’ for Russian UFC fighters.
His reach advantage is considerable in the fight however:
So why is O’Malley’s brand so relatable to fight fans (typically young males)? O’Malley also co-hosts the podcast ‘The Timbo Sugar Show’ and is known for his colorful tattoos, every-changing hairstyles and love of marijuana. His YouTube is also nearing 500k followers.
Whatever happens at UFC 280 his Career prospects are bright in the cage and after his athletic career.
So You Want to be an MMA Fighter?
O’Malley is both confident yet not too full of himself. He’s a star yet he knows he has an expiration date as an MMA performer. Everything he does encapsulates this incredible self-awareness of his professional brand as part athlete, part celebrity. Unfortunately these are not traits that are necessarily common among his peers.
O'Malley was given the nickname "Sugar" by one of his MMA coaches in Montana early on in his career.
O’Malley has a reach of 72 inches, which is a significant advantage in his weight class. He won’t likely be knocking out elite competition in the top #10, but with good movement and a good jab and the cardio to go five rounds, he could find a winning formula with his boxing pedigree.
Last Look at Stats
His strike differential of offense to defense is pretty decent, although his takedown defense is a bit suspect. Luckily Yan is mostly a striker too.
I think Sean O’Malley is a top five fighter who might get the title with good timing, but won’t be an all-time great. But I could be proved wrong, what do I know I’m just a fan.
